So Many Changes (and the latest Katie Reads video)…

So some readers already know that yesterday was my final exam at university for my master’s degree. It was the toughest exam I’ve ever sat, and afterwards, I went to one of my friends’ houses and we all partied until quite late at night.

Waking up brings a fresh perspective on reality, though. My master’s degree isn’t actually over yet; I still have to do a piece of research and hand it in. Our group doesn’t graduate until late late late in the year, by which time, I will be living in a different country.

My husband got a job abroad, way wayyyy outside Europe, and we’re going there for the foreseeable future. Whether I can fly back for graduation or not depends on how much flights cost to and from my new country (I promise I’ll tell you where I’ve gone once we get there… I just don’t want to accidentally jinx it). But, before then, it’s all happening.

We’re actually leaving before the hand-in deadline for my research, so it’s been non-stop recently; ditching our worldly goods, trying to find someone to rent the house, and trying to pull yet more money out of anywhere to get repairs made to the place so our future tenants don’t have to worry about anything when they move in. Then there’s keeping this website running, making a webcomic every week, writing my books (actually, I have such a long backlog of books waiting to be published at this point that I seriously don’t need to write anything for AT LEAST a couple of months, but I do have edits to make), then there’s the monthly YouTube videos, and lastly, there’s my research, for which I have to go across the country and collect field data this week.

SO it’s hard to tell if I’m coming or going at the moment! But I’m looking forward to it all, even if it’s going to be complicated to get it all sorted out in time.

One of my friends said yesterday, “Not having to pretend like you have your shit together — because it’s actually together — is a sign of being a grownup. Then it’s game over and everything becomes predictable and boring.” Perish the thought. So maybe a bit more chaos is a good thing.

And with that in mind, here’s the link to this month’s Katie Reads video – where I read an excerpt from my F/f/F menage, “Serving the Immortals.” And I call it by the wrong title. 😂 When I tried to fix it, I discovered that YouTube has helpfully removed annotations, like, it’s not a thing any more.

Laila gets spanked at the zoo in Her Daddy and Her Master

So I thought I’d join in the WIP It Up Wednesday blog hop this week, which is my first ever blog hop! Big thanks to Meredith O’Reilly for helping me figure out how to join in! Today, Laila gets spanked at the zoo in this excerpt from Her Daddy and Her Master. The sequel is coming out soon, and Her Daddy and Her Master just came out on Kindle Unlimited so this is a great time to read it!

The petting zoo was just opening as they arrived, and Basil held Laila’s hand as she pulled towards the entrance.

“Hold your horses, little lady, we’ve gotta buy the tickets first!”

“But daddy I need to see the animals!  What if a bird comes and they all run away and the petting zoo closes and we never get to see them?”

“That’s very unlikely, sweetheart.”  He steered her towards the ticket booth.  “Hi, one adult and one Laila… sorry, two adults please.”

“Sure.”  The clerk was unphased by Basil’s slip-up and he somehow managed to hold onto Laila while he paid.  They went through the turnstile and Basil unfolded the map he’d been given at the ticket booth.

“We’re over here, and that’s where we’re headed.  Would you like an ice-cream before you see the Arctic Foxes?”  Basil folded the map away and put it in his pocket.

“What’s ice cream?”

“It’s a dessert that’s sort of like the frosting on the top of cupcakes… only colder,” Basil explained.  “Want to try one?”

“Yes please, that sounds tasty!”

Basil bought Laila an ice cream from a vendor and handed it to her.  He watched her lick it, then her eyes lit up.

“This is tastylicious!”  She licked it again, seemingly content with her new food.

“Make sure you look where you’re going so you don’t trip and drop it,” Basil warned, as he saw one of her shoes scrape the uneven edge of a paving slab.

“I will.  C’mon we have to see the foxes!”  She ran ahead, and was still looking down at her ice-cream when she tripped and fell.  Basil sighed.

“Are you hurt?”  He asked, and she shook her head then sat up.  Then looked down.

Basil followed her gaze.  The ice cream had splattered on the floor, the cone was cracked, and Basil was about to tell Laila he would buy her another one, but he never got a chance because she burst into tears.

“My ice cream!”  she wailed, crying her little heart out.  Basil tried to comfort her but she lashed out at him and kicked her feet against the floor.

“You made me drop it!”  she accused, still crying and kicking.

“Laila, calm down, it’s only an ice cream,” Basil said, but she wasn’t listening.

“I want my ice cream!”  she shouted, drawing the attention of several passers-by.  They didn’t look for long – this was not uncommon on Minos Kerala.

“That’s it young lady, you’re coming with me.”  In a swift motion, Basil lifted her over one shoulder and walked towards the sign for the public conveniences.  In the block of unisex toilets, there was also a little door marked ‘discipline room’ and the sign above the handle showed it was vacant.

He carried her inside and locked the door behind them.  He sat down, threw her over his knee and flipped back the hem of her skirt, then put one hand on her sit spot and paused.

“Do you know why you’re getting a spanking?” he asked.

“Because you’re mean!”  Laila replied, her voice slightly muffled.  “You’re the meanest mean of all the mean-means!”

Basil could only guess what conclusions Laila was jumping to.

“I’ll scream so loud they’ll break the door down and stop you!”  she challenged, still upturned on his knee.

“I don’t think you understand where you are.  Perhaps you didn’t try to read the sign on the door.”  Basil paused to let that unnerve her slightly.  “You’re in a discipline room.  That’s a special room for dominants, daddies or masters to be able to punish their submissives, littles, slaves or whatnot.”  He paused again.  He wanted to be sure she fully knew what was happening.  “You’ll notice the paddle and crop hanging on the wall next to that cane.  Disciplining a naughty bottom is viewed as just as necessary as going to the toilet or eating around here.  Scream as much as you like.  Nobody will intervene.”

“I hate you!”  Laila snarled, trying to kick free.

“You don’t mean that.”  Basil let it wash over him.  As much as he disliked her behavior, he knew full well that this ongoing tantrum was actually a good (if unwanted) sign; Laila felt safe enough to test the boundaries.  Now it was his job to enforce them, so she knew he would always catch her.  “I am going to spank you now because your behavior today has been unacceptable.  After I’ve decided you have learnt the lesson, you will be forgiven.  I know you dropped your ice cream but you didn’t even give me a chance to make it better by buying you another, you just threw a tantrum.”

“I didn’t throw a tantrum!  I was sad about my ice cream!” she shouted, trying to wriggle free.

Basil ignored her, reflecting that this was his least favorite part of being a daddy, although he knew it was very important.  He cupped his hand slightly as he brought it down, making contact with Laila’s cheeks and noticing how the blow sent very faint ripples through her sit spot.  She yelped, although he knew for a fact it hadn’t been a hard swat.  He added another one, then kept going, making sure to use a steady pace so she didn’t have a chance to get a handle on the situation.  Once she had settled down a little, she stopped struggling, and Basil got a chance to think about how they’d got to this point.

He preferred to use the least amount of spanking necessary, although now he reflected that he had been a bit lax since they arrived on Minos Kerala.  The state of Laila’s room should have been his first clue, he thought.  It wouldn’t surprise him if the Lost City of Atlantis – that was later found again, having re-located to a pseudo-planet in the Metafysikos system, shortly before it was lost forever during the un-terraforming wars – was hiding under a pile of her laundry.

He added a couple of sharp smacks to her sit spot, thinking that he should’ve spent more time with her after they arrived on the planet.  Was it so much to expect Flin to help out with keeping Laila on the straight and narrow?  Basil decided to talk to Flin as soon as he next saw him.  Laila was turning into a handful, and she was going to need consistency.  Basil kept spanking Laila’s bottom, as it went from pale pink to a deeper shade of rose, and she seemed to be just accepting that this was happening now.  She was still kicking, of course, but he figured it was some sort of reflex rather than a desire to escape.

“Please, daddy, I’m sorry.” she said at length, and Basil knew she’d held out as long as she could before saying it.

“Thank-you for apologizing, Laila, I will accept your apology once the spanking is over.” he said, feeling resolute that he was going to make sure his little girl didn’t become a spoiled brat.  His hand was starting to get warm, and Laila’s attitude seemed to have improved so he gave her a few more spanks then released her.

That would have been the end of it, had Laila not said, “I still think you’re being mean.”

How to make a Twitter advert for erotic romance authors

Posting an eye-catching image on Twitter to advertise your erotic romance novel or erotica story is a great way to get people interested in your book. But how do you do that?! In October, I took a graphic design course to learn all about the mysteries of making adverts. Here’s a step-by-step checklist to help you create a Twitter ad:

  1. Get some picture editing software. I recommend GIMP because it is free (another option is PhotoShop, but I don’t use that because it’s expensive). One huge advantage of using GIMP (rather than Krita or Corel, for example) is that there are loads of videos on YouTube with tutorials about how to do everything. Just Google, “how to make bubble text in GIMP” and you’ll see what I mean. You can download GIMP for free here.
  2. When you open GIMP, go to “file” then click “new…”
GIMP how to open a new image
  3. It will show a popup like this. Where I’ve put “500” (twice) put the size of your image (see step 4).
    GIMP new image dialog
  4. Pictures are measured in pixels. Your Twitter ad needs to be 500×500 (1:1 ratio) or 440×220 (2:1 ratio) pixels in size. This guide always has up-to-date measurements for all social media pictures.
  5. Go online and search for a nice background. Whatever you search for, type “CC BY” or “CC 0” after your search, because your pictures need to be a special type of copyright-free licence so you don’t get in trouble for accidentally using someone else’s protected work. When you find a nice picture, it should say on the webpage what you’re allowed to use the picture for. You probably want “commercial and non-commercial use” because even though you’re not selling your advert, it’s going to help you sell books, which is a commercial use.
  6. Copy your picture, then paste it into your GIMP image and hit the “new layer” button to anchor your picture to a layer (so you can use it properly).

  7. If the background picture is too big, it might look strange, so go to “layer” and “scale layer” and change the layer’s size to the same size as your overall picture size (you don’t have to do this if the background picture looks okay, even if it’s too big, because when you export, only the visible part of the picture will be kept).
GIMP scale layer her daddy and her master 99p sale katie douglas how to make book ad
Here’s where to find the “scale layer” option:

And here’s where to change the size:

  8. Get the book cover file that you should have from your publisher. Stormy Night Publications nearly always sends the final version to me shortly after the books are published, but I’m not sure about what other publishers do. Open that file in either Paint or GIMP and, on your computer keyboard, hold down CTRL and tap “a” at the same time. This will “select all.” Copy the image (edit/copy, or right click, “copy” or CTRL and “c”), and paste it into your GIMP book advert (edit/paste, right click, “paste” or CTRL and “v”). It might look like it’s gone wrong because the cover will be HUGE!

  9. Hit “new layer” so you can work with the picture you just pasted, and it will stop saying “floating layer” in your layer dialog (the tab at the bottom right).
GIMP cover too big new layer
  10. Repeat step 7 to scale the book cover down so it looks less scary. 200×300 is a good size for the book cover on a Twitter ad.
GIMP cover too big scale layer1

GIMP cover too big scale layer2
The picture of the chain keeps the length and height ratio, so the picture doesn’t go a weird shape when you change its size. Only change the width, and when you click in the box next to height, it should automatically change it for you.
  11. To move your book cover, click “move” (and make sure the bottom option is checked: “Move the active layer”) and slide your book cover into position, until it’s where you want it. You can always do this to move it again, later, so don’t worry too much about whether it’s exactly where it needs to be at this stage.

GIMP how to move layer cover1
Once those options are selected you can click and drag the cover to where you want it.
  12. Now click on the “text” tool (big letter A in the toolbox on the left) and click and drag your mouse to draw a box where you want to write something. Put your words in the box.
GIMP text tool how to make great book advert twitter katie douglas
  13. Highlight your text and select font, size, color etc until it’s how you want it (this works in a similar way to Microsoft Word).
  14. If the text won’t change color or size, it’s because there’s two options and for some strange reason, GIMP sometimes forgets it has two options and refuses to change one of them. Try the other one (see picture) and see if that makes it work.
GIMP text edit can't change font color text not working
  15. To make your picture usable online, you need to export it (GIMP calls the process of turning all those layers into one picture “exporting” instead of “saving”, and when you hit save, it doesn’t make a picture you can use online). Go to “file” then “export as” and you have lots of options for file type; .png and .jpg are the best options for the Internet. If GIMP comes up with anything complicated while you’re trying to export, just hit “export” and it should go away and turn your work into a saved, exported picture.

  16. Once you have your picture, go to Twitter, write a nice tweet, add some hashtags and upload your image!

    GIMP finished pic use ruler
Extra tip: The ruler at the top and to the left can help you line up each of your layers so they align properly with the rest of your picture.

Don’t forget to put a link to your book when you write your Tweet, and follow me on Twitter to get regular updates with content like this!

A Little Picnic

A couple of weeks ago I didn’t really feel like eating lunch, and I couldn’t decide what to have. I was heading for grumpytown when my grownup intervened and told me to have a sandwich. I didn’t feel like having a sandwich, and I really didn’t feel like buttering bread, but then I had an idea.

First, I went upstairs and brushed my hair into two pigtails, and added some fun bow clips I found recently for 40p per pair at Home Bargains. Then I put on my babygrow and got my grownup to fasten the poppers. I’m usually about 4-6 when we play, but sometimes I go a bit younger. I’ve never quite gotten the hang of the whole total dependence thing though.

I went to the special storage above the stairs, where my stuffies are kept (sadly, they don’t all fit in our bed or on the sofa), and I picked out a few of my favorites (does anyone else get a bit sad about the toys that get left out of regular use or is it me?) then I got my favorite blankie which I spread on the floor, and I made a tray of food and had a teddy bear’s picnic in the living room. It was so much fun!

Here are some photos:

This was my picnic. There was healthy banana and grapes, and there was orange juice in my sippy cup, and there was Vegemite in my sandwich (it’s this Australian spread stuff).

Another view of my picnic. The toys (clockwise, starting with the purple one on the left) are called: BigPon, PonPon, Kermit, Flessent, Rainbow, Misty and Winnie the Pooh.

Feeding PonPon, one of my big purple unicorns. He needs his orange juice too!

Rainbow also wanted some orange juice, although she didn’t really need it since she already has lots of orange in her mane and tail.

Can you tell how much I like unicorns? Once I ate all my food, I put the tray away but my toys stayed out for the rest of the day because I wasn’t quite ready to say bye to them yet.

One day, I’d like to have a picnic like this outside on a summery day. Maybe if we ever own acres and acres of land where we can put up lots of high fences.

Naming characters for your spanking BDSM romance

Dominant Dom… are we all a little tired of hearing about Dominic the Dominant yet? I am. I feel mean, but I have to try not to laugh every time anyone uses it. It’s never quite done it for me. I know, I know, it’s an extremely popular name for male characters in BDSM and even some spanking (non-BDSM) romances, and most people probably don’t care, and there have been one or two books which I sort-of liked which did this (but I didn’t like them enough to remember titles/authors years later), but I just struggle to see past the ridiculousness of it. I mean, should the female character be Submissive Submeera? When the Dominant male is called Dom or Dominic I have to work extra-hard to like a book.

Anyway, naming a character can be a tricky business. Male leads need to be strong and sexy but lovable. The name needs to fit the setting of the book.

I name my characters (at least, the main ones, the bad guys, and any with a significant role… can’t say I do this for every last character) the same way I named all my pet rabbits (and I’ve had 8 of those): I look through baby name lists, figure out a shortlist, then take a mental break for 5 minutes (making a cup of tea, switching the laundry into the tumble dryer, vacuuming the carpet, petting one of my bunnies…) and usually during that time, I find one or two of the names from my shortlist are playing around my mind more than the others. If it’s just one, I go with that. If it’s two, I’ll cross out everything else on my shortlist then think it over some more, imagining my character being called each of the two names, until I have one name.

When I took creative writing classes 12 years ago (I was underage, but I showed up anyway and they never asked me to leave so I tried not to draw attention to the fact I was there), I was told three “golden rules” about naming characters:
Firstly, that in a short story, all characters should be named (I disagree, and I’ve seen it work really well in some short stories where one or other of the main characters has no name). Secondly, I was told that you should never give more than one character in a story the same first initial. Thirdly, I was told that the first name and last name should never begin with the same letter.

Well, all this advice was for women’s fiction (that undefinable genre) and I don’t think it’s all true for spanking or BDSM romance. Nameless characters can be sexy and mysterious, especially in short stories. In longer books, if it’s natural for two characters to have a first name beginning with the same letter, what’s the issue? In real life, plenty of people have the same name, let alone the same initials! As long as the story isn’t all characters with the same name or same initials, and as long as each character is unique and interesting, I personally don’t see the issue with occasionally breaking these three rules. I mean, if a reader is confused about which character is doing what, it’s probably not the names that are an issue.

But where do I find inspiration for naming characters when I get stuck? Different name websites have different names (and a lot of the time, the origins/meanings don’t agree between different sites). Here’s some fabulous sites I use for picking names:

This one shows you which names were popular last year (that might be a good or bad thing). If you want to do more historical research, the social security agency in the USA keeps a historical list of popular baby names which is searchable here
For a great international list of names (which includes American names and names from further afield), Nameberry is great! Here’s their list of girls names and their list of boys names! They even have a list of unisex names, too!
Emma’s Diary is more aimed at British names, because guess what? People have different names in the UK to the US (and common American names would get you viciously mocked on the playground in the UK).

Another good source of ideas is to Google some characteristic you want your character name to convey, e.g. “strong, modern boys names” because chances are, there’s a thread on a parenting forum somewhere! Here’s an example for “strong modern boys names” from Netmums. I’m not sure I like any of those names for characters, let alone human beings, but I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to actual baby names for real live babies, so each to their own.

When I’m choosing a name, I usually do it after I’ve already written a profile for my characters, because that way I know if a name sums up the “feel” of the character or not. Some people start with the name and work backwards. When I’m really stuck, I have been known to throw out my entire list and just mix up letters until I find something that sounds right, although that’s not a great solution for historical romances (but I find those easiest to come up with names for).

Do you have any tips for other spanking or BDSM romance authors for coming up with character names? Let me know in the comments!

Lots of love,
Katie xxxx

10 Party Games For Ageplayers

Birthday party? Christmas party? October twenty-eighth party? Every day can be a party day when you’re little! But, supposing you’re planning a party for your little one… what party games should there be? This list might not suit every ageplayer of every age, but anyone who plays between age 3-8 will surely find something they’d like to do on this list (keep scrolling to find the rules)!

10 ageplay party games

  1. Pass the parcel:
This game is best for: Groups of at least 3 party guests.
Preparation for grownups: Wrap up a little present, e.g. a chocolate bar or a keychain, then put another present on top of that present, and wrap them up together, so when someone opens the first layer of wrapping paper, they get a present, and when someone else opens the next layer, they get a different present, and so on. Wrap one extra layer with another present inside for each guest coming to the party (if someone can’t make it at the last minute, someone who DOES turn up will get 2 presents). It’s better to have too many presents than not enough!
How to run the game: Get all the littles to sit in a circle. Put some music on, and hand the present to one of the littles. They have to pass the present around the circle (they’re not allowed to hold on to it for too long). When the music stops, whoever is holding the present at the time gets to unwrap one layer of wrapping paper, and they get a present. As the grownup, you are in control of the music, so it’s up to you to make sure each little gets a present!
  2. Musical chairs:
This game is best for: Littles who ageplay at 5 or under.
Preparation for grownups: You’ll need one chair for every little. If you don’t have these, consider playing musical statues (below) instead.
How to run the game: Put all the chairs in the middle of the room, usually back-to-back, so everyone can walk around them. Put some music on. The littles have to form an orderly line and walk around the chairs. When the music stops, they have to sit down as quickly as possible. The last person to sit down is “out”, and each round, one chair is removed. Then the music starts again and they walk around the chairs again, doing the same thing each time the music stops. This game is better for younger littles (under 5s) whereas musical statues works better for older littles.
  3. Musical statues:
This game is best for: Littles who ageplay at 5 or older.
    Preparation for grownups: None.
How to run the game: Ask the littles to clear the space in the room so everyone can walk around the floor. Then put some music on. All the littles have to walk around the room (or hop, or skip) but when the music stops, they have to strike a pose and stand as still as a statue! The last person to stand still gets eliminated each time, and so does anyone who moves, giggles or who forgets to strike a pose. The last person standing gets a prize.
  4. Gift Hunt:
This game is best for: Parties of fewer than five guests.
Preparation for grownups: Hide gifts (several for each guest) around the room or rooms where the party will take place. Remember to put them in places where they won’t be spotted until the littles are playing this game (or, if you have another grownup to help, hide the presents while the littles are all distracted with another game). If they’re in gift wrap, then the littles will be able to find them more easily because otherwise they might not know what they’re looking for.
How to run the game: Ask the littles to line up at one side of the room, and tell them there are presents hidden around the room (you could even give them a basket or a bag to collect the presents). They have to search for the presents until they’ve found them all (you can, of course, give them directions if they really can’t find them).
  5. Daddy says:
This game is best for: Littles who can follow simple instructions.
    Preparation for grownups: None.
How to run the game: The littles should all be sitting down in a group. Explain to them that they have to do things when you say “Daddy says”, but not if you don’t say that. So, for example, if you say, “Daddy says… touch your nose” they should touch their noses, but if you just say, “touch your nose” they should not (because you didn’t say “Daddy says” at the start). If any littles don’t do something Daddy says, or they do something that didn’t start with “Daddy says,” they’re “out” of the game and the last little wins (this game can go on, especially with littles who are good at following instructions). Remember that at the end of the game, “Daddy says… that’s the end of the game!” This game can work with one little or lots of littles, and is also fun for obedience training.
  6. Stuck in the mud:
This game is best for: Littles who have too much energy! You need at least 3 players.
    Preparation for grownups: None.
How to run the game: One person is “it” and they have to chase the other littles and tag them. If a little gets tagged, they are “stuck in the mud” which means they have to stand with their legs apart and their arms wide (legs need to be wide enough that someone can crawl through them). If the person who is “it” gets every other player “stuck in the mud,” they win, and the last person they tagged gets to be “it” next. But… the other players can “rescue” the players who are “stuck in the mud” at any time during the game, by crawling between their legs to get rid of the mud (logical). Unless you have a very small group, it is unlikely that “it” will win, so decide how long you want the littles to run around for, because this game will keep going forever if you don’t decide to do something else at some point.
  7. Letters in your name:
This game is best for: Littles with self-discipline.
    Preparation for grownups: None.
How to run the game: All the littles line up against one side of the room. You call out a letter and if anyone has that letter in their name, they take a step for each time it comes up (e.g. if you said “N,” Nile would take one step and Anne would take two steps). It’s up to you whether they’re allowed to include first, last and middle names (this can lead to some people mysteriously telling you they have middle names that would win at Scrabble). The first person who makes it across the room wins a prize.
  8. The box game:
This game is best for: Flexible littles.
    Preparation for grownups: None.
How to run the game: Put a cardboard box (cereal boxes work well) on the floor so all the littles stand around it. Taking turns, each little has to pick up the box without using their hands. Only their feet may touch the floor! But each time someone picks up the box, you must tear some of the card off the top so the box gets smaller each time.
  9. Chinese Whispers:
This game is best for: Everyone!
How to run the game: The grownup thinks of a phrase or sentence (a song lyric also works, but make sure it’s not too long. “This is how we do” is about the perfect length. The littles all sit in a circle, then the grownup whispers the phrase to the first little, who has to repeat it to the person next to them (in a whisper), and it goes around the entire circle until the very last person has to tell the group what the phrase was. Usually by the end, even in a small group, the phrase has changed so much that it’s funny.
  10. Sardines:
This game is best for: Groups of 3 or more.
How to run the game: It’s sort of like back-to-front hide and seek. One person gets a headstart and they have to go and hide. Everyone else has to look for them, only when someone finds them, they have to stay with them (so eventually, everyone’s jammed in the same place… like sardines). The game ends when the last person finds everyone.

Erotica Words for Spanking and Anal Sex Writers in BDSM Erotic Romance

As part of my series on writing spanking erotic romance stories, which I write about on Tuesdays, I wanted to talk about the butt today, or rather, words you can use to write about the bottom!

There are an abundance of erotica dictionaries and romance dictionaries on Amazon, (and really, they’re a thesaurus for sex words). I bought some of them (I won’t name and shame), and I was surprised to find they lacked an important set of words that spanking authors need: Bottom words and words to do with anal sex! I guess BDSM authors will have the same problem if they write anal/spanking scenes.

Writing a successful spanking scene depends on being able to describe what is going on in a way that doesn’t jar readers or confuse them, and sometimes when I’m writing a BDSM scene or a spanking story, I find I just can’t think of the exact word that I wanted to use to describe the bottom!

To help everyone out, here’s some useful erotica words especially for spanking writers and anal sex authors. Because the butt is a very interesting thing, and everyone should have lots of words for it! Where some of these are two-word descriptors, they’re not exhaustive, and there’s lots of scope for mix-and-match combos here!

I’ve tried to give a little context about how frequently you can get away with using these words; common words can be used at least once in a paragraph, less common words should be used less frequently, rare words (in my opinion) generally don’t read well but sometimes they can work, depending on what you’re writing. For example, in a sci-fi spanking romance, derriere probably wouldn’t work, but in a French historical spanking romance, it would be an awesome word to throw in occasionally. Bear in mind that this is all my opinion and your mileage may differ when it comes to word choice!

The greater butt area:
Common/frequent use words: Bottom, ass, cheeks.
Less common: Butt, behind, buttocks, rear, haunches, backside, posterior, rump, seat, globes.
Rare: Derriere, mounds, buns, tail, sit-upon, glutes, gluteus maximus, cleft between the cheeks.
Ageplay-specific: Tushie, botty, bum.
British: Bum, arse, crack, beam end.

The anus opening:
Common/frequent use words: Bottom, ass, ass hole, hole, rear opening, rear entrance.
Less common: Ring of muscle, rosebud, puckered hole, least-used opening.
Rare: Anus, sphincter.
British: Arse hole.

Inside the anus:
Common/frequent use words: Back/rear passage.
Less common: Rear tunnel/channel, bowels, gut, colon, inner sphincter (there’s two), prostate.

Things the anus does:
Clenches, quivers, shudders, expels, opens, tightens, contracts, pulses/winks, squeezes.

Words to describe hand spankings:
Commonly/frequently: Spanked, swatted, reddened, landed.
Less common: Pawed, smacked, cracked (as in, his palm cracked), peppered, blows, flurry of (swats/blows/spanks), punished.

Places that get spanked:
Commonly/frequently: cheeks, sit-spot, thighs, top of the thighs.
Less common: Clit, inner thighs, the area around the ass hole, the sulcus muscle (where the thighs meet the butt cheeks), palm of the hand.

There are probably plenty more than this, if I think of any others, I’ll update this list! Got any more? Add them in the comments!

Lots of love,
Katie xxxx

The Main Spanking Scenarios For Spanking Erotic Romance Writers

Every genre has its tropes, the patterns that readers expect from a story. Today I wanted to cover the main scenarios found in spanking erotic romance, which is, itself, a sub-set of BDSM erotic romance.

Hate at First Sight: In this scenario, the two (or more) characters detest one another so much that you just KNOW they’re going to end up together. It’s often combined with one of the other tropes, below. There are so many examples of this that it would be difficult to pick one specifically, although if this trope works properly, both characters need to be likeable (to end up with a satisfying HEA), so a misunderstanding is usually used to make this trope work.

Sold/Gifted/Sent/Given/Kidnapped: This is a VERY popular sci-fi trope, but has many different names, because Amazon basically dictates what can and can’t happen in books these days, and Amazon doesn’t like anyone using “Kidnapped” in the title (unless you’re R.L. Stevenson, presumably, because they’re still selling “Kidnapped!”). To get around this, there are lots of books where the heroine has been gifted, given or sent to the hero. The biggest challenge with this sort of story is this: What sort of a crap-ass bastard alphahole ACCEPTS a gifted or kidnapped woman?! And why doesn’t he INSTANTLY set her free when she naturally resists?!* Loki Renard is very good at exploring both points of view of the male and female main characters in her stories, and The Alien’s Leash is a good example of how the whole “kidnapped” trope can work with a likeable (but still very much in control) main male character.

Rescued: This is the opposite of kidnapped, and is more common in sweet romance. The hero is a traditional hero who wants to save the heroine from some circumstance she can’t overcome on her own. It’s not the most popular trope these days, because kidnapping is WAY sexier for BDSM purposes (damn you, Amazon, with your sudden but inevitable book title rules) and fits more with the fantasy of being made to do something you don’t want to do. A rescuer is less likely to push your limits. An example of a rescue which led to a more hardcore relationship can be found in the first book of my sci-fi spanking romance series, Her Daddy and Her Master.

Marriage of convenience: There are External Reasons (TM) why a heroine needs to marry a hero. It’s a very popular trope for historical romance or western (historical) romance, and historical spanking romance is no exception. It’s especially good where consent is dubious, because the institution of marriage (TM) implies some sort of relationship between the two main characters. Obviously, the main snag with this type of story is that you know they’re getting a HEA whether they like it or not… but then again, that’s not really a snag, is it? A good example of a marriage of convenience can be found in Amelia Smarts’ Handling Susannah.

Of course, this is all for spanking erotic romance, not for erotica, which has a different set of tropes and where, generally speaking, anything goes (as long as Amazon permits it), heroes don’t have to be likeable and ever afters don’t have to be happy. There are other tropes, as well, but these ones come up very often in spanking erotic romance. Which is your favourite?

*To clarify my own point of view on the whole “kidnapped” trope: Mmmm… kidnapped… [Homer Simpson gurgle]. I mean… not in real life,** but in a story it’s HOT AS FUCK when someone gets this one right. Especially because it so naturally lends itself to the hate at first sight trope.

**Unless you’re The Doctor, and even then, Colin Baker can fuck right back off to Gallifrey with Matt Smith, but Tom Baker will find me hiding in his pocket under a bag of Jelly Babies. An interstellar PhD will get you nowhere with me if you’re an asshat. Confused? Here’s a list of people who played The Doctor from Doctor Who. Does anyone know if there’s a spanking erotica fanfic version of the episode The Five Doctors? Because OMFG that should be a thing… OK, maybe I’m getting distracted here…AHEM.
