Reformed by the Scotsman is Out Now!

I am super-duper-loop-the-looper-ally-ooper excited to announce that Reformed by the Scotsman is out now!
Here’s the beautiful cover by Korey Mae Johnson:

Here’s the blurb:
When her scandalous behavior finally forces her wealthy parents to take drastic action, twenty-two-year-old Adeline Hawthorne is sent to Edinburgh to live in the home of her father’s friend Edward Wolstanton. The stern Scotsman is tasked with correcting the recalcitrant young lady by any means necessary, and it isn’t long before Adeline is taken over Edward’s knee for a painful, embarrassing spanking.

Though she quickly discovers that her new guardian will not hesitate to punish her as thoroughly and shamefully as he sees fit–even stripping her completely and applying a leather tawse to her bare bottom when she attempts to escape his custody–Edward’s firm-handed dominance arouses Adeline deeply. She soon finds herself wondering what it would be like to have such a man as her husband, but will he ever see her as more than a wayward girl in need of reform?

Publisher’s Note: Reformed by the Scotsman includes spankings and sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

You can find it here on Amazon.com or here on Amazon.co.uk

A scorching excerpt from Reformed by the Scotsman

So I missed the deadline to participate in WipItUp Wednesday this week because of all the work I had to finish for my university course. Now it’s done, I have a scorching excerpt from Reformed by the Scotsman, my new book which is out Saturday (5th August). It’s the 1920s, it’s Edinburgh, and Adeline Hawthorne is getting spanked by Edward Wolstanton, to whom she was sent to be reformed:

***

Feeling furiously embarrassed and extremely hot, she turned her head away from him before she recovered her scathing sarcasm.

“Like what you see? Bet you collect magazine-pictures of girls in their underthings, don’t you?” she said.

Instead of wrong-footing him or provoking a series of denials, she seemed to have galvanized his will, for he chose that moment to sit in an overstuffed armchair and pull her over his knee. The position was not lost on her, and she inhaled sharply in horror because there was only one thing anybody did once they had a girl over their knee, bottom upturned, face and feet near the floor. Her black silky knickers almost completely protected her bottom cheeks, though, so even if he really was going to spank her like an errant schoolgirl, it couldn’t possibly hurt.

Telling herself there was no possibility that stuffy, proper Edward would really spank her, she yelped when his hand connected loudly with her bottom, resonating throughout the room with a loud clap. The sting was instant and seemed to cover most of her right cheek. He brought his hand down over and over in a brisk pace, raining hard swats of fire over her bottom cheeks before she opened her mouth to protest.

“How dare you? When my father hears about this, you’ll be sorry!” she protested, trying to avoid the spanks. She was infuriated. How dare he punish her like a naughty child? She shifted around on his knee hoping to escape, but he held her firmly. A warm glow flashed through her nether regions as she realized he had bested her.

“Your father gave me express permission to use any means necessary to improve your attitude, young lady, and that is what I’m doing.” Edward spoke calmly. His voice didn’t match with the flurry of sharp swats he was subjecting her sit-spot to.

“No! He wouldn’t! Not if he knew you were… doing this to me!” she retorted hotly.

“I don’t think he was especially interested in the details,” Edward said. She kicked and wriggled and generally made a nuisance of herself attempting to inconvenience him as much as possible during this spanking. Truly, she was unable to escape, and part of her liked being thoroughly helpless while someone held her to account, not because she had conceded to their pathetic protests, but because they had the guts to overpower her and compel her to obey. There was a strong sense of satisfaction that accompanied the feeling of helplessness. Her underwear grew wet and her nipples hardened in response to being forced to submit.

Horrified at her weakness, she buried her emotions and fought him with redoubled effort. It hurt, though, and despite the fact she didn’t stop fighting him, his swats gave her pause for thought. How long would he keep this up? Could she fight back for longer than he could spank her?

“If you continue resisting me while you are over my knee, and threatening to tattle to your father, I will give you some letter paper once this is over and I will stand beside you and make you write a letter to the Earl of Hathersedge detailing exactly what I am doing right now, including how you are dressed, how your bottom feels, the color it has turned—a tantalizing pink, if you care to know—and what, precisely, you did to earn the punishment, starting with the rummy business at the train station.” Edward paused spanking her and gently caressed her bottom. It burned so much that it even felt pink, especially when he touched her.

He continued outlining the potential future punishment as his fingers trailed along her skin. “I will then expect you to address it and take it to the post office where you will tell the postmistress that you are writing to your father to inform him that you are in disgrace, although you will kindly spare her the details as I wouldn’t want you to offend her sensibilities.”

He landed some particularly hard swats on the skin between the top of her thigh and her bottom cheeks and she growled in frustration. It was so undignified and she growled at the sharper sting as his hand connected with the sensitive skin there.

As if his threat of humiliation and enforced spanking weren’t bad enough, he leaned down to her ear and quietly murmured in a low voice, his Scottish vowels piercing his otherwise refined English accent, “Of course, when writing to your father, you can leave out the fact that your knickers are soaked through.”

Oooh I can’t WAIT to see what you all make of this story! I don’t write many one-on-ones (although there are more to come), so I really liked having more space within the story to explore the characters’ thoughts, feelings and backstory in greater depth than in Captured by the Highlanders. I’ll be sending copies to my ARC readers the MINUTE I get the files from the publisher, and the cover is being finalized as I write so I’ll post that tomorrow!

Sneak peek! His Little Earthling is out on Saturday!

How’s your week so far? Mine is busy, busy, busy! This week for WipItUp Wednesday, I have another exciting preview from His Little Earthling and I also now have the cover to share with you! In this sneak peek, Sarah is about to get a really big punishment for doing something very naughty, but she makes it worse for herself by hiding in a cupboard.

When he grasped the sleeve of her dress, she contorted out of it and climbed over the half-wall between her room and the living room, then ran into the kitchen. She was halfway inside one of the big cupboards beneath the countertop when she felt a firm grip on one of her feet. Kicking free, she got inside the cupboard and wriggled as far back as she could.

This seemed like a good place to live. There was food, air… what else did anyone need? Sure, the air was actually a little thin, and for some reason she was having difficulty breathing, and the shelf above was digging uncomfortably into her hip, but that was all fine details. If she didn’t leave the cupboard, she would never have to face Ral again. To her surprise, instead of reaching in to pull her out, he stepped back.

“Sarah, I’m very disappointed with you right now.” His voice sounded far away.

“I’m sorry.” It would have been so much more meaningful if she hadn’t been jammed into a kitchen cupboard trying to get away from an unknown but terrifying punishment. On one level, she knew that Ral was only trying to clear things between them, and that she deserved this, but on a more primal level, she didn’t want to find out what was supposed to happen next. Especially now that she was in more trouble.

“You’ve got two options. If you come out of there of your own accord, you’ll get exactly what I planned for you, plus the hand spanking. If I have to drag you out, I’ll be obliged to add the spoon as well. It’s not safe to climb into cupboards like this; the base is far more likely to give way if I have to wrestle you out.”

“I’m scared.”

“Don’t be. Just come out like a good—well, not exactly a good girl, but less bad than if you stay put.”

“I meant I’m scared about the punishment.” She felt that living in a cupboard was a much better option.

“Would I do anything to harm you?”

Sarah considered this for a moment before she answered. “No, but there’s a whole plethora of really owwie things you’d do that are completely harmless!”

“So how many of those do I need to add before you come out?”

She shook her head fervently. “None! Subtract some!”

Ral sighed. “Why do you always do everything backwards? Why do you always make your life so difficult? I’ve given you everything you needed to settle into this world and I’ve shown you what you need to do for yourself, and every time I look away for a moment, you do the opposite.”

“Maybe I know how to do stuff too!” Sarah grumbled. “I saved you, didn’t I?”

“By sheer bloody luck! Your first attempt was to find some gangsters in the most dangerous part of town, was it not?”

Sarah glared at his knees from her hiding place.

“At least I did something. If I was your perfect girl I would’ve just stood here, wringing my hands and not knowing what to do. That’s what you want, isn’t it? Well I can’t apologize for that, because that girl would still be here wondering where you’d got to. And you’d have starved to death by now.”

“Elves don’t need to eat or drink that often. We can turn the air around us into energy for most of our needs. I’d have still been fine in a week or two.”

“And would Little Miss Perfect have found you in a week? Or would she have been too busy ironing her size-zero school uniform, doing her homework and practicing fitting large objects into her mouth?”

“Okay, young lady, you’ve had ample time to come out of your own accord, I’m calling an end to these shenanigans.” Before Sarah said anything further, Ral’s enormous hands reached in and closed around her waist, then she felt herself sliding towards the rest of Ral. When she was out far enough to see the weary expression on his face, she sighed.

He paid no mind to that, and instead tipped her over one of his broad shoulders, where he landed some sharp swats to her sit-spot with his hand before she heard him open a drawer.

What’s in the drawer? Anyone want to hazard a guess? While you’re wondering, here’s the cover which was designed by the ever-talented Korey Mae Johnson:

I am in love with this cover!

His Little Earthling is out on Saturday and in the meantime, book 1 in the series, Her Daddy and Her Master, is discounted to $0.99; you can find it here.

Just add icing.

Naming characters for your spanking BDSM romance

Dominant Dom… are we all a little tired of hearing about Dominic the Dominant yet? I am. I feel mean, but I have to try not to laugh every time anyone uses it. It’s never quite done it for me. I know, I know, it’s an extremely popular name for male characters in BDSM and even some spanking (non-BDSM) romances, and most people probably don’t care, and there have been one or two books which I sort-of liked which did this (but I didn’t like them enough to remember titles/authors years later), but I just struggle to see past the ridiculousness of it. I mean, should the female character be Submissive Submeera? When the Dominant male is called Dom or Dominic I have to work extra-hard to like a book.

Anyway, naming a character can be a tricky business. Male leads need to be strong and sexy but lovable. The name needs to fit the setting of the book.

I name my characters (at least, the main ones, the bad guys, and any with a significant role… can’t say I do this for every last character) the same way I named all my pet rabbits (and I’ve had 8 of those): I look through baby name lists, figure out a shortlist, then take a mental break for 5 minutes (making a cup of tea, switching the laundry into the tumble dryer, vacuuming the carpet, petting one of my bunnies…) and usually during that time, I find one or two of the names from my shortlist are playing around my mind more than the others. If it’s just one, I go with that. If it’s two, I’ll cross out everything else on my shortlist then think it over some more, imagining my character being called each of the two names, until I have one name.

When I took creative writing classes 12 years ago (I was underage, but I showed up anyway and they never asked me to leave so I tried not to draw attention to the fact I was there), I was told three “golden rules” about naming characters:
Firstly, that in a short story, all characters should be named (I disagree, and I’ve seen it work really well in some short stories where one or other of the main characters has no name). Secondly, I was told that you should never give more than one character in a story the same first initial. Thirdly, I was told that the first name and last name should never begin with the same letter.

Well, all this advice was for women’s fiction (that undefinable genre) and I don’t think it’s all true for spanking or BDSM romance. Nameless characters can be sexy and mysterious, especially in short stories. In longer books, if it’s natural for two characters to have a first name beginning with the same letter, what’s the issue? In real life, plenty of people have the same name, let alone the same initials! As long as the story isn’t all characters with the same name or same initials, and as long as each character is unique and interesting, I personally don’t see the issue with occasionally breaking these three rules. I mean, if a reader is confused about which character is doing what, it’s probably not the names that are an issue.

But where do I find inspiration for naming characters when I get stuck? Different name websites have different names (and a lot of the time, the origins/meanings don’t agree between different sites). Here’s some fabulous sites I use for picking names:

This one shows you which names were popular last year (that might be a good or bad thing). If you want to do more historical research, the social security agency in the USA keeps a historical list of popular baby names which is searchable here
For a great international list of names (which includes American names and names from further afield), Nameberry is great! Here’s their list of girls names and their list of boys names! They even have a list of unisex names, too!
Emma’s Diary is more aimed at British names, because guess what? People have different names in the UK to the US (and common American names would get you viciously mocked on the playground in the UK).

Another good source of ideas is to Google some characteristic you want your character name to convey, e.g. “strong, modern boys names” because chances are, there’s a thread on a parenting forum somewhere! Here’s an example for “strong modern boys names” from Netmums. I’m not sure I like any of those names for characters, let alone human beings, but I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to actual baby names for real live babies, so each to their own.

When I’m choosing a name, I usually do it after I’ve already written a profile for my characters, because that way I know if a name sums up the “feel” of the character or not. Some people start with the name and work backwards. When I’m really stuck, I have been known to throw out my entire list and just mix up letters until I find something that sounds right, although that’s not a great solution for historical romances (but I find those easiest to come up with names for).

Do you have any tips for other spanking or BDSM romance authors for coming up with character names? Let me know in the comments!

Lots of love,
Katie xxxx

The Main Spanking Scenarios For Spanking Erotic Romance Writers

Every genre has its tropes, the patterns that readers expect from a story. Today I wanted to cover the main scenarios found in spanking erotic romance, which is, itself, a sub-set of BDSM erotic romance.

Hate at First Sight: In this scenario, the two (or more) characters detest one another so much that you just KNOW they’re going to end up together. It’s often combined with one of the other tropes, below. There are so many examples of this that it would be difficult to pick one specifically, although if this trope works properly, both characters need to be likeable (to end up with a satisfying HEA), so a misunderstanding is usually used to make this trope work.

Sold/Gifted/Sent/Given/Kidnapped: This is a VERY popular sci-fi trope, but has many different names, because Amazon basically dictates what can and can’t happen in books these days, and Amazon doesn’t like anyone using “Kidnapped” in the title (unless you’re R.L. Stevenson, presumably, because they’re still selling “Kidnapped!”). To get around this, there are lots of books where the heroine has been gifted, given or sent to the hero. The biggest challenge with this sort of story is this: What sort of a crap-ass bastard alphahole ACCEPTS a gifted or kidnapped woman?! And why doesn’t he INSTANTLY set her free when she naturally resists?!* Loki Renard is very good at exploring both points of view of the male and female main characters in her stories, and The Alien’s Leash is a good example of how the whole “kidnapped” trope can work with a likeable (but still very much in control) main male character.

Rescued: This is the opposite of kidnapped, and is more common in sweet romance. The hero is a traditional hero who wants to save the heroine from some circumstance she can’t overcome on her own. It’s not the most popular trope these days, because kidnapping is WAY sexier for BDSM purposes (damn you, Amazon, with your sudden but inevitable book title rules) and fits more with the fantasy of being made to do something you don’t want to do. A rescuer is less likely to push your limits. An example of a rescue which led to a more hardcore relationship can be found in the first book of my sci-fi spanking romance series, Her Daddy and Her Master.

Marriage of convenience: There are External Reasons (TM) why a heroine needs to marry a hero. It’s a very popular trope for historical romance or western (historical) romance, and historical spanking romance is no exception. It’s especially good where consent is dubious, because the institution of marriage (TM) implies some sort of relationship between the two main characters. Obviously, the main snag with this type of story is that you know they’re getting a HEA whether they like it or not… but then again, that’s not really a snag, is it? A good example of a marriage of convenience can be found in Amelia Smarts’ Handling Susannah.

Of course, this is all for spanking erotic romance, not for erotica, which has a different set of tropes and where, generally speaking, anything goes (as long as Amazon permits it), heroes don’t have to be likeable and ever afters don’t have to be happy. There are other tropes, as well, but these ones come up very often in spanking erotic romance. Which is your favourite?

Lots of Love,
Katie xxxx

*To clarify my own point of view on the whole “kidnapped” trope: Mmmm… kidnapped… [Homer Simpson gurgle]. I mean… not in real life,** but in a story it’s HOT AS FUCK when someone gets this one right. Especially because it so naturally lends itself to the hate at first sight trope.

**Unless you’re The Doctor, and even then, Colin Baker can fuck right back off to Gallifrey with Matt Smith, but Tom Baker will find me hiding in his pocket under a bag of Jelly Babies. An interstellar PhD will get you nowhere with me if you’re an asshat. Confused? Here’s a list of people who played The Doctor from Doctor Who. Does anyone know if there’s a spanking erotica fanfic version of the episode The Five Doctors? Because OMFG that should be a thing… OK, maybe I’m getting distracted here…AHEM.
